Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida Recognizes Jessica Valek as the 2026 Okaloosa County Big of the Year
Okaloosa County, FL - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is proud to recognize Jessica Valek as the 2026 Okaloosa County Big of the Year. This award honors a mentor who has made a lasting impact through consistent support, strong connection, and a meaningful commitment to a young person's growth.
Jessica has been matched with her Little Sister Anna in our community-based program since August 2023. From the beginning, she has been a steady and dependable presence, building a relationship rooted in trust, encouragement, and open communication.
During their time together, Jessica and Anna have shared a wide range of experiences that have strengthened their bond. Most recently, they participated in a 5K Color Run together. They have also enjoyed fishing trips, visits to HarborWalk Village and local farmers markets, ice skating, trying new restaurants, and even participating in a podcast recording together at a local radio station. Whether they are out exploring the community or stopping for candy or ice cream, their time together is filled with laughter, conversation, and meaningful connection.
Over time, Anna and Jessica have built a strong and trusting relationship where Anna feels comfortable opening up and being herself. Jessica stays consistently engaged between visits, checking in regularly and offering steady support even during busy seasons or challenging moments.
Reflecting on their relationship, Anna shared, "Jessica has always been accepting and I feel like I can be myself with her." Her words reflect the safe and supportive connection Jessica has created through her mentorship.
Jessica's dedication to mentorship extends far beyond her current match. She first became involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2017 after graduating college. Although that match eventually closed after she moved, her passion for mentoring never faded. After returning to the area, she wasted no time signing up to be a Big Sister again, eager to continue making a positive impact in the life of a young person.
Her involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters has continued to grow over the years. In December 2024, she joined the Okaloosa County Advisory Board and also volunteers at fundraising events, continuing to support the agency and its mission in meaningful ways.
